Preserving the Derby
I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who worked so hard to help find a resolution to the All-American Soap Box Derby's current financial situation (''Council backs derby rescue package,'' Feb. 9).
In particular, I am grateful for the thoughtful actions of Mayor Don Plusquellic, the Greater Akron Chamber, the Akron City Council and FirstMerit Bank.
Akron has a history of pulling together to preserve its heritage and protect its future. By supporting the derby, the community has once again shown its exceptional spirit and heart.
The real winners, of course, are our young racers and their families. They will continue to experience ''the thrill of the hill'' and to view Akron as a place where derby dreams come true.
The Soap Box Derby is a unique sport. It brings children together with their families and teaches them about good sportsmanship, determination and creative solutions to tough challenges. It also gives them a chance to have fun and make friends - away from the computer, television and video games.
Thank you all, again, for preserving our city's derby legacy and providing a platform to launch our exciting plans for the future.
